After completing four years of accredited undergraduate training in psychology, it is possible to take the path of further study and complete a PhD in psychology. This extended research project over a three to four year period allows the student research to develop expertise in a detailed field of expertise in a specific area of human behaviour.

Those with PhDs in psychology may embark on a career as an academic at a university where they continue their research and teach psychology. Many research psychologists also work for government departments, community organisations, think tanks or hospitals.
